Miyazaki: Mahjong, Barbeques, Beer & Basil Fawlty

Miyazaki: Mahjong, Barbeques, Beer & Basil Fawlty

We played just two games of mahjong during August, on two consecutive evenings at Neil’s house in Miyazaki, Kyushu. The results were good for Jaime, okay for David, not so great for Neil or Ray. In spite of the fact that the 3PMG Cock’s-Eye Mahjong Club had never met so far south before, no photos of the historic mahjong event were taken. Just before the second evening’s game we had a barbeque in Neil’s garden, so a photo of that…

Mahjong & Other Political Games

Mahjong & Other Political Games

Two weeks ago Kenyon returned to the table from his summer holidays. Tim was present for a beer and the talk inevitably turned towards Barack Obama’s acceptance speech. I shall spare the blogosphere yet another ramble on the intertwined subjects of BO’s prospects, policies, race and religion.  Far more important than those political games is the effect that BO – or more to the point, Tim’s talking to Kenyon about BO – had on Kenyon’s ability to concentrate on mahjong….

Apologies For The Silence!

Apologies For The Silence!

Things have been a bit hectic recently so the Cock’s Eye blog has been sadly neglected. Friday 2nd November: Irish Famine

Friday 2nd November: Irish Famine

Ray came into town from the sticks tonight and joined us at the table of conviviality. The first two games were played by him, Noda and Jaime. David arrived towards the end of the first game and already the foreign players had a gloomy air about them. David ordered yakimeshi and passed on the second game so as to dedicate himself to the cause of dispatching his repast with due decorum. By the time both dinner and the second game…

Friday 26th October: Old & Middle Guard Advance Continues…

This evening at Kodama went on for longer than anticipated and was full of incident and variety. The first thing that greeted us on entering the mahjong parlour was the site of Noda’s Mask. Noda had a cold and spent much of the evening coughing and spluttering like an old drain. However, like the upstanding Son of Nippon that he is, he kept his hooter firmly swaddled behind a surgical mask. Ask a Japanese fellow what his ears are for…

Friday 19th October: Middle and Old Guard Advance!

Friday 19th October: Middle and Old Guard Advance!

Suffering from indigestion during a crucial portion of the afternoon of 18th June 1815, the Upstart Emperor of the French removed himself from the field of battle to seek relief by lying down in a barn. I don’t know if Jaime spent the evening lying down in a barn but nevertheless, he was not on the field of battle during the operations that I now propose to relate. Kenyon, the Marshal Ney of tonight’s operations, sent his cavalry galloping forward…
