A special delivery this morning. The Folio Society’s limited edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses translated by Sir Arthur Golding. The volume is a hefty 13″ x 9¾”, about the size and weight of a family Bible. It is bound in Nigerian goatskin leather, blocked in gold with a design on the cover by Simon Brett based on Bernini’s sculpture of Apollo and Daphne, which you can see in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of sculpture in the world. The book is illustrated with prints of the series of paintings by Titian of episodes from the Metamorphoses.
At lunch time I came back home from a trip to the p.o. to find the postman had delivered a much smaller parcel. This one contained La Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso. It is a hardback “public domain” reproduction of an 1871 Italian edition that was copied onto an open source website. The result is pretty good and at least it enables me to get hold of the original – post free from The Book Depository – so that I can study it alongside Max Wickert’s excellent verse translation that arrived a few days ago.
Today, I added an events calendar and a neat photo gallery plug-in called “Flipping Book” to this website. I posted some scenic shots of Japan on the public photo gallery, which you can view by clicking the main Gallery tab, not the dated sub-tabs which are private! All this took much longer than it need have because I got absorbed in looking up details relating to some of the photos, especially those I took on Kashiragashira Island in 2007. I blogged about our trip to the Goto Islands after we got back to Hiroshima and got the name of the island wrong a couple of times (I now notice, three years later).
This morning, before going out, I made a new splash page for my free “targeted traffic/article marketing” course for Internet marketers. I tried using the free splash page wizard over at Kooiii.com but couldn’t get rid of some glitches so ended up making my own splash page and to my delight, it seems to be working more effectively than anything I’ve done before. I have just had notification that two people have subscribed already. If you have not idea what a splash page is, or if you do and would like to have a sneak peak, check it out!
